Girl Scouts look to Mother Bear Project for Gold Award Inspiration
November 25, 2005
The Girl Scout Gold Award is comparable to the Boy Scout Eagle Award. For their Gold Award, four Senior Girl Scouts from Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, MN, Emily Buggy, Laura Buggy, Jessica Giesen and Brittany Bohlig, made 325 hygiene kits for a school in Zambia, Africa.
Influenced by Amy’s pictures, video and the recent additions to the school, two showers and a toilet, the girls decided to make hygiene kits for each of the children at the Yasheni Home and Multipurpose Center. Each kit included a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and a mesh storage bag sewn by the girls. The girls gathered donations of the supplies from local businesses, neighbors and Girl Scouts. They also made How-to booklets with pictures explaining how to use each of the supplies sent to the children.
